Composite Fillings

Dental fillings have been used for many years now to restore teeth that are affected by cavities. The decay of the enamel and the underlying dentin leaves the tooth vulnerable to further damage, which is why it is crucial to restoring its shape and structural integrity using filling material.

What is a composite filling?

When you develop a cavity, your dentist will remove the decay from your tooth and use a filling to cover or 'fill' the area where the decayed material was.

Traditionally, fillings were a silver-coloured material, known as amalgam, that were quite visible in contrast to the shade of a natural tooth. Over time, other options were developed, one of which was composite.

Composite fillings are a tooth-coloured mix of plastic and ceramic, making them an excellent option for teeth that are exposed or visible when you talk or smile.

The Benefits of Composite Fillings
  • Composite fillings blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, making them virtually invisible.
  • The material is slightly flexible resulting in reduced drilling, and preserving more of your natural tooth.
  • The resin material in composite fillings creates a strong bond to your tooth.
  • They are durable and can withstand moderate pressure and usage.
  • They are well-suited to small fillings and repairs.
  • Composite can also be used to handle other cosmetic alterations, such as changing the colour or shape of your teeth.
When are Composite Fillings used?

Composite fillings are effective for repairing chipped or cracked teeth because they blend in with your tooth, giving you a natural look.

Tooth areas that sustain heavy use, such as the chewing surfaces of molars, are typically not good candidates for a composite filling.

Some dental plans won't cover the cost of composite in these areas due to their reduced strength in comparison to amalgam. Speak with your dentist to determine which type best suits your needs.

How do Cavities Occur?

Cavities are caused due to the erosive action of the toxins released by the microbes in the mouth. These microbes deposit themselves on the teeth in the form of plaque, and if left to stay for a long time, they form dark tartar patches. The microbes release acidic substances that cause cavities, which tend to grow deeper and broader gradually. Getting such teeth restored at the right time can be the difference between losing or saving them.

What are Composite Fillings?

Composite fillings are one of the most widely preferred options to restore teeth affected by cavities. They are made from tooth-colored composite resin, which offers excellent properties. This makes it highly preferred for filling cavities. Although metals like gold, silver, and amalgam were being used to fill cavities many years ago, we have turned towards white fillings, owing to all the advantages they offer. Some of the significant benefits of composite fillings are:

How are Composite Fillings Placed?

Dental fillings require a single consultation with the dentist to be placed. When you visit us for the consultation, we will screen the mouth thoroughly to spot the tartar deposits and cavities. The decay from the cavities and the tartar deposits will be removed using ultrasonic scaling. The removed microbial deposits will be washed away using a jet of water. The prepared surface will be etched using an etching liquid to make sure it is rough and allows the filling to adhere well.

Dr. Zarghouni will then prepare the filling material by matching it with the color and texture of your enamel. It will be applied to the prepared surface and shaped accordingly. We will harden the filling using a curing light, after which a bite test is taken to determine how the filling is affecting your bite. If required, we will trim the filling and polish it to make sure it fits and looks perfect.
