If you’ll be undergoing a surgical procedure, here are a few things to keep in mind to make it go as smoothly as possible.

BEFORE THE SURGERY

  • If you’re receiving anesthesia during your procedure, there are a few things you should know. First, do not eat for at least 8 hours prior to the surgery. If you smoke, avoid smoking for at least 12 hours before the procedure.
  • You will likely not be able to drive yourself home after the procedure, so please make sure a responsible adult can accompany you.
  • On the day of the procedure, do not wear any accessories that might get in your dentist’s way or cause harm. That includes jewelry, contact lenses, and dentures.

AFTER THE SURGERY

  • Try to avoid eating for at least two hours after the procedure. Some types of anesthesia can cause nausea for a few hours afterwards, so when you do eat, stick to soft foods that are easy on the stomach.
  • You should avoid doing anything that will disturb the blood clot or irritate the affected area until it heals completely. This means avoiding hard or scratchy foods, refraining from using straws, and using caution when cleaning the area.
  • If you experience any complications after surgery, please call our office immediately so we can get you in to see your dentist as soon as possible.
