Types of teeth and their functions

Most adults have 32 teeth, 14 at the top of the mouth and 14 at the bottom, which help us chew the food we eat no matter how hard it is.

These 32 teeth are divided into four large groups, each with its function and objective: 8 incisors, 4 canines, 8 premolars and 12 molars, including the 4 wisdom teeth.

types of teeth

incisors

They are located in the front of the mouth. We have four in the upper jaw and four in the lower jaw.

They are shaped like small chisels. Their biting surface is sharp and they are used to cut food into small pieces

The permanent set of these teeth erupts between the ages of 6 and 8.

canines

They are located at the angle of the dental arches, right next to the incisors. We have two upper canines and two lower canines.

They have a sharp, pointy biting surface. Its function is to tear food.

The lower permanent canines emerge first, at around 9 years of age, and the upper permanent canines erupt at around 11 or 12 years of age.

premolars

Unlike incisors and canines, premolars have a flat biting surface. Its function is to tear and crush food into smaller pieces so that they are easier to swallow.

They settle next to the canines. There are four upper and four lower premolars and they are unique to the permanent dentition. In addition, the temporary or milk dentition does not present premolars.

The milk molar teeth are replaced by permanent premolars, which begin to appear in the mouth around the age of 10.

molars

The molars are the largest and strongest teeth. We have six at the top and six at the bottom. They have a large flat biting surface. Its function is to chew, crush and grind food.

The first molars usually erupt around the age of 6 and the second molars appear in the mouth around the age of 12.

The molars include the four wisdom teeth, which are the last teeth to appear in the mouth. In general, they come between the ages of 17 and 25. Wisdom teeth are also called wisdom teeth or third molars.

Not all of us have enough space in our mouths for this last group of teeth. For this reason, wisdom teeth are often semi-erupted or even impacted, which means that they remain trapped under the gums. If there is no room for these teeth and they begin to cause problems, they may need to be removed.

It is important to take care of all your teeth, therefore, if you need professional help and have your oral health checked, we recommend that you request an online appointment to prevent any type of pathology.
