Everything you need to know about taste buds

Family dentist in Houston

Taste buds are small sensory organs located in different structures of the oral cavity that send taste messages to the brain. These organs have nerve endings that chemically react to the different flavors of the food we eat.

Where are the taste buds?

We can locate some of our taste buds when we stick our tongue out in front of a mirror, with those small bumps visible on the back of it.

These small bumps have highly sensitive microscopic hairs that are responsible for sensing the different flavors and communicating them to our brain.

The taste buds contain the taste receptor cells, which are also known as taste cells.

What flavors do the taste buds perceive?

These taste buds can sense different flavors classified into four categories:

Sweet.

Sour.

Salty.

Bitter.

Types of taste buds

There are different types of taste buds depending on their shape and location:

Filiform: they are the most common, they cover the entire base of the tongue and are cylinder-shaped.

Fungiforms: Located near the front of the tongue and have a peculiar mushroom shape.

Goblet: located near the back of the tongue, closest to the throat

Foliated: located on the sides of the tongue and on its back.

Taste disorder: what treatments are there?

Taste disorders are normally diagnosed by the GP, ENT or dentist. Symptoms of taste disorders can include conditions such as loss of taste or smell, or once-pleasant tastes suddenly become unpleasant. In case you have any of these symptoms, we recommend you make an online appointment with one of our specialists.

Along with a physical examination and taking into account the medical history, the professional will evaluate the perception of smell and taste.

Treatment for taste disorders may involve adjusting medication being taken if it is thought to be interfering with the sense of taste or smell, identifying and correcting an underlying medical condition, identifying and removing obstructions in the mouth that may be causing the problem and quit smoking.

In burning mouth syndrome, treatment includes pain control. Certain antidepressants have also been shown to help alleviate symptoms.

Taste disorders can affect the ability to maintain a proper diet because when food does not taste good, you may be less inclined to eat as often or as balanced as you would normally.

It is important to talk to your doctor if you notice a loss or change in your sense of taste or smell, so if this is happening to you, we recommend making an online appointment with one of our specialists.
